The paper aims to describe and, to some extent, analyse the historical development and current status of the accounting and auditing profession in Saudi Arabia. It concludes by highlighting a number of points that can be helpful in the future strategic decision-making of such an evolving profession.

Professor Hussam A. Al-Angari got his elementary, secondary and higher educational degrees from Al-Thager School in Jeddah; BA and MSc degrees from King Abdulaziz University; and finally got his PhD from Essex University in the UK. He had been working as a lecturer at the Accounting Department in King Abdulaziz University since 1991, promoted to Assistant Professor in 2000, to Associate Professor in 2004, to Full Professor in 2008 and appointed Associate Dean for Post Graduate Studies and Academic Research at the Faculty of Economics and Administration of King Abdulaziz University in 2005. In 2009 he was appointed Dean for the Faculty of Economics and Administration for two years. He has added to three editions of his text book Auditing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and one edition of his book Who Takes to Account the Certified Public Accountants. He has been and is still contributing to the work of a large number of administrative and academic boards and committees in and out of the University and for many professional, business and public organizations. He solely examined many research work, participated in many theses examination committees, and supervised around twenty MSc thesis during his work as a faculty member.
