Mercosur in the Media of Mercosur Countries

This research proposes an estimation of the interest in the Mercosur trade bloc among the people of its member countries – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. It was done by verifying how each of these countries is being portrayed by its partners media. This way, five important newspapers were selected as databases: “El Clarín”, from Buenos Aires; “Folha de S. Paulo”, from São Paulo; “Última Hora”, from Asunción; “El País”, from Montevideo; and “El Universal”, from Caracas. Covering a one-month period, the research measures the amount of citations for each country (discarding the cases where the citations refer to the country where the newspaper is located) and the Mercosur itself. The citations found were distributed into the following groupings: editorial (stories involving the economy, politics, culture, sports, and general facts) and analytical (favourable, unfavourable or neutral) categories. The study analyses the degree of each country´s importance for the Mercosur press.
